ADD/ADHD meds
Anyone else have a child on meds for their ADD/ADHD?
Malachi takes Concerta. He's been on it for 3 years. I was really against giving him meds but I am really amazed at the difference the meds have made. |

Re: ADD/ADHD meds
My son has been on concerta for about 4 years we are totally against giving meds but you are right what a difference it makes. The moment I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks I knew he was bouncing off the walls!!! We are on the grey pill now the second lowest dosage. Once he started first grade I saw how quickly it wore off and decided he needed it upped. We usually only give it during school times or when we have some place to go and he needs to stay "controlled". How about you? Do you give the meds all the time. When Tyler 1st started the meds I just couldnt bring myself to tell him what exactly it was for so for a year he thought it was allergy medicine. I was diagnosed ADD when I was in the 5th grade was very late to be diagnosed but man what a difference it made.

Re: ADD/ADHD meds
Malachi is taking 36mg everyday. We lowered it right before the end of school because he was having trouble sleeping. He had so many problems at the end of the school year I am going to up it back up before school starts.

Re: ADD/ADHD meds
That's what Tyler is taking but then again I wanted to give it to him today but we didn't get up till almost 10 and if I give it to him too late he will stay up all night long I really dont have too much of a hard time controlling him it's just other ppl thend to get aggitated with him when he's not medicated. I just kinda go by what we did when I was a kid I only took the meds when i needed to concentrate or when I was in school other than that no meds

Re: ADD/ADHD meds
We had an extensive work up, to include testing done along with observation appointments in about an 8-9 month period, before Dennis and I agreed to start a medication to see how it went in Ayden (5). We were nervous of side-affects, of him being/looking "drugged" and so on.
Our first med we tried was Adderal XR.... that was rough. First there were awful rebound affects...then he wouldn't eat OR drink AT ALL...then he'd be up until 4 am, being good, and staying in bed for the most part, but wouldn't go to sleep, which meant I couldn't go to sleep. We switched to an immediate release Adderall, once we adjusted the dose to a second time during the day to bridge that rebound affect, worked like a DREAM! He was still the same Ayden, but he opened up so much more, and his personality that always seemed locked up and hidden came to the surface! He's so silly, so talky, so smart, so inquisitive, so loving. AND THE BEST PART, is NOW he's starting to understand "No" and his attention span is now long enough for us to give a short explanation of what we are wanting. He's not as mean to his little sister any more, he's so much more huggy and cuddly, AND he'll sit and play a WHOLE game of Chutes and Ladders or other type of kiddy board game, when before he couldn't make it through three turns before he was off! Because of him not eating or drinking barely anything for those weeks, and not going to sleep until 4am each night, we asked to try a different drug. The Dr. put him on Ritalin. We're just now getting the dosages right (like I requested, the Dr. started at the lowest dose, and said we'll work our way up). So, now I'm seeing a lot of the good results that I talked about before, BUT, he now goes to sleep earlier. He's averaging 11pm now, which is a heck of a lot different than 4am! Also, he's back to his 'ole self, for the most part in eating. Which is a relief because he's not even on the growth charts at all for his weight and height for a five year old, so his not eating really worried me from before. Oh, BTW, Ayden has severe ADHD w/ Impulsivity. |
